One of the questions I get asked most is “How come you have so much discipline? How can I improve on my discipline?” I have never thought of myself as a particularly disciplined person, but I realize that I am better than many at going through the struggle to achieve the rewards; I guess that’s simply what discipline is. Now, why is it easier for me to do that?
There are a few reasons, I list the most important here:
|1||ALWAYS HAVE CLEAR GOALS
Clear goals help you see past the struggle to the reward. They articulate the glory after
the story(in the words of a famous preacher)!! When you set clear goals, it’s much
easier to honour the struggle and go through the hardship because you anticipate the
joy that will come out of it. The more important the goal is to you, the easier it is to go
through the pain of birthing it. And yes, it’s a totally parallel analogy to giving birth!!
As Tony Robbins says “Success leaves clues”. Therefore, reading those clues helps
you pick up on them. You realise the price these people paid to achieve their greatness.
That commits you to doing those things that you might otherwise have considered too
difficult or unattainable.
Meditation grounds you, calms you, activates your powerful subconscious and enables
you dream! You can project past the present suffering and transport yourself to the
Land of Dreams. This strengthens you emotionally and spiritually for the tasks ahead.
Fitness is the greatest discipline builder on earth! Why? It’s simple and clutter free, your
diet and exercise are totally under your control and the results are a direct result of your
input! Also your body directs your mind, so if you get your body in tip-top shape, your
mind simply comes along for the ride!
|5||GET ACCOUNTABILITY TOOLS/ PARTNERS
If our self-discipline wanes, we can always recruit others to help us win the battle. The
Lifehack bootcamp teaches us 4 layers of accountability we can call upon to get our
discipline through the roof:
1. Make public declarations to hold our feet to the fire.
2. An Accountability buddy will give you one-on-one pressure
3. A team of people you respect and look up to will keep you true
4. A coach will hold up the Mirror and raise the bar for you
|6||REMOVE OPTIONS - SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE
If you focus on the things that are important to you, it’s much easier to make those
things happen. Focus creates energy, grit and success. Some of the most successful
business people in the world wear a “uniform” to simplify dressing and packing for
travel time. Clutter impedes success!
|7||REMOVE TEMPTATIONS & DISTRACTIONS
In addition to getting temptations and distractions out of your way when you can control
them, be sure to have a backup plan for dealing with those you can’t get out of the way.
I don’t pay my DSTV subscription as there are waaay too many sources of mindless
distraction on that box, (ok, ok its a screen now, must stop giving myself away!). Think
ahead about all the food that’s going to be at that party and decide what you are going
to eat or eat before you go!
|8||DO THE HARDEST THINGS FIRST
Doing the hardest things first not only removes those tasks from your to-do list, it saves
you from the nagging feeling you get when you procrastinate. Let me tell you a secret;
the TV isn’t going anywhere, but your goals have deadlines. If you find yourself
pushing something away because it’s hard, break it into little chunks and plan to do it
first thing in the morning. I’m always surprised at, having procrastinated for soooo long,
how quickly I get something done by just starting!!
You do yourself a disservice when you do anything without completely committing to it.
If it is important to you, treat it with importance. As a rule of thumb commit the way you
would want the doctor performing surgery on you to commit! Wouldn’t want him
watching TV in the background would you? Without commitment, the easy way out is
always easier. Stop giving yourself excuses. NIKE!!!!
|10||CREATE HABITS, RITUALS & ROUTINES
Create positive habits by doing those things you enjoy after doing the things that are
less enjoyable. Set alarms on your phone and create rituals and routines that help you
achieve the most in your day. Become aware of your habits and use that knowledge to
break bad habits and make fantastic ones like a boss. How? Invoke the powerful
power of repetition
